Arch Manning and the Newman Greenies defeat the Booker T. Washington Lions 55-22 in Thursday night show down on ESPN.
Newman vs. Booker T. Washington has become a known as the Battle of Uptown. Last year’s matchup was a complete battle, with Newman winning 27-20, Arch Manning (So.) threw 4 picks in that game. Booker T. Washington looked to get a win this year, but the Greenies was just too much.
Newman started out hot marching down the field on their first possession, punching it in with Joseph Pleasant (Sr.) to go up 7-0 in the first quarter. Booker T. Washignton would respond immediately with a big 50 yard run by Arnold Barnes (Jr.) Newman then marches down the field again scoring on a 1 yard QB keeper by Arch Manning (So.) to go up 14-8.
The game then became a battle of these two talented defenses. The Greenies Sterling Scott (Sr.) had a Pick 6 putting Newman up 21-8. After multiple forced turnovers and 3 & outs, Booker T. Washington would find their way into the end zone. The Lions star wide receiver Tyrese Johnson (Sr.) was in at Quarterback and scored on a 40 yard read-option.
Newman would score before the half, Arch Manning (So.) finding his favorite target AJ Johnson (Jr.) for a 16 yard Touchdown.
The 2nd half started with a 75 yard pick 6 by Booker T. Washington Keith Hampton (Sr.). That would be the last score for the Lions of the game. It would then be all Newman for the rest of the game.
In a losing effort, Booker T. Washington had some bright spots. Running back Arnold Barnes (Jr.) had 13 carries for 135 yards and a Touchdown. He is a physical back with some home run speed, I would look for the Lions to get him more touches as the season progresses.
Keith Hampton (Sr.) had 2 interceptions, with one returned for a Touchdown, and a punt return for a Touchdown but was called back because of a penalty. Hampton should defiantly be on some schools radar after that big performance against top 2023 Quarterback Arch Manning who he has picked off a total of 5 times in 2 games.
We were able to see Tyrese Johnson (Sr.) make a big catch over a defender late in the game, but he was in at quarterback for majority of the snaps.
For Newman, Arch Manning (So.) started off slow but found his rhythm as the game went on finishing 21-28 for 253 yards and 1 passing Touchdown and 2 rushing Touchdowns. Manning showed off his wheels with a couple of big runs in the game.
Star wideout AJ Johnson (Jr.) had a modest night with 3 catches and a Touchdown, but he is still a problem on the outside and Manning’s favorite target. The star of the night was none other then Athlete Sterling Scott (Sr.). The Harvard commit had 2 rushing Touchdowns and a Pick 6 for the Greenies.
Booker T. Washington (2-1) will travel to Douglas next week. Newman (3-0) will host St. Thomas Aquinas next Friday.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Sterling Scott (Sr.)- Newman
Humble & coachable player with a High Motor
Played both ways to help his team get on top
1st time playing running back in high school gets 2 TDs.
Able to tackle in space and cover
This being his senior year, expect the Greenies to use him all over the field in quest of a state championship
Bullet trains, cheetahs, and Alred Luke all things that if you look up the word speed a picture of them will show up. But, this isn’t about bullet trains or cheetahs no this is about someone who is so fast and quick that if you blink he’s already doing the griddy in the endzone…
Jon McCall is a big framed wideout with freakishly elite athletic ability. It is a huge mystery as to why the 6’4 Senior receiver out of Sophie B. Wright isn’t on EVERY school’s radar.
